University Hospital Lewisham (UHL)

The Lewisham Hospital NHS Trust is a teaching hospital for the University of London which obtained University status in 1997 because of the role it plays in undergraduate education and research. Undergraduates from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ school of medicine are assigned to Lewisham for part of their training. The hospital provides undergraduate and postgraduate education facilities for all healthcare professionals. Trainees are encouraged to provide teaching for medical students and other junior medical staff.

In addition to most of the services of a traditional general hospital, it also offers specialist services in Paediatric and Neonatal Surgery, Neonatal intensive care, Cystic Fibrosis and Ear, Nose and Throat services.  The Trust has invested in a large modern ward block called Riverside, which began operation towards the end of 2006 and was officially opened in May 2007 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The programme directors of the VTS maintain strong links with clinical supervisors at the hospital to ensure relevant teaching is provided to GP trainees.  This includes regular departmental teaching as well as opportunities to present at Grand Rounds and flexibility to attend GP teaching.
